Landfills are over flowing from the trash throw away every day. Since more and more trash is generated over time, many newer landfills are needed to be created. This intern is taking up the vast and many areas of land we live on. Our trash is not only taking up land but is destroying resources, animals, and their way of life too. Trash can be reduced by many methods that have been created.
MSW-(Municipal solid waste) or commonly know as trash, consists of every day items that are thrown away. Paper, plastics, glass, and tin are some of the many items that are thrown away. Today about 4.3%pounds of trash per person is generated, their is doubled the amount in 1990, 2.7 pounds of trash per person. MSW is currently managed in many practices.
Recycling is the most preferred and most effective method of controlling MSW. It is broken into the three most known R's, Recycling (turning old products to new), Reducing (using less of), and finials Reusing (using over and over. Recycling, which including composing, diverted more than 57 million tons of material away from land full , and incineration in 1996 and up to 34 million tons of trash in 1990 (that is a increase of 67% in dust 6 years!). Recycling benefits are preferred, it prevents the emission of many greenhouse gasses and water pollutants, conserves many resources for the future and reduces the need for landfill and combustion facilities.
Landfills use the natural process of decomposition to rot away trash. There are about 8,000 factories in 1988, and there are about 2,400 in 1996. This is a steady decrease in the numbers of landfill created over time. There are many products that area thrown away that are dangerous to your health if mishandled, these left over products are called house hold waste. Many landfills do accept house hold waste but if takes more money and time to treat them. Landfills are regulated by either the state, tribal, and or local government.
Source reduction is another one of the many methods used to reduce trash. To is most proofread by the EPA, Environmental Protection Agency. Source Reduction slows down the process of trash from hitting the landfills or other trash centers, stopping it from going to the centers to be dealt with. Source reduction reaps the many benefits because of the methods that it uses and prevents tons of trash from being generated or put away in centers for waste. Source reduction also prevents emissions of the many greenhouse gasses, reduces pollutants, saves energy, conserves resources, and also reduces the need for other trash centers.
Combuster/ incenerator facilites "toast" trash by burning them and reducing them in the process. Burning MSW can generate energy in special burning plants while reducing the amount of MSW by up to 90% in volume, and 75% in weight! Combusters and incinerators are regulated by the EPA and Radiation dept. because burning trash causes many emissions that are harmful to humans and the environment. In the U.S. since 1996, 110 cumbusters with energy recovery technology exist. The 110 cumbusters have the capability to incinerate up to 100,000 tons of MSW per day.
House hold waste comes from commonly used products that we use in out hones and daily life. Some of the products that we use in our homes and daily life. Some of the products of (HHW) are the left over portions of pesticides, cleaners, oils, etc. These products can be very dangerous to your health if mishandled and could cause a problem to your health.
There are many more methods that are used to help reduce MSW that weren't mentioned because there are just so many of them!! Each method has its strengths and weakness in controlling MSW but the point is we need to control our waste problem before it is out of proportion. Even the slightest bit of help goes a long way in the never ending battle to reduce our waste problem.
